Asian 1332203 Asian Leyland Line (Frederick Leyland) A photo postcard from the Northern Publishing Co, featuring the Asian. She was built in 1898 as the Colombian for the West India & Pacific SS Co Ltd. In 1901 she passed to Frederick Leyland and was renamed Asian in 1903. She was one of the ships that heard the distress call of the Titanic (she was 300 miles away at the time) and relayed the message to other ships. Extremely light corner wear. The tug in the photo is the Cleveland of 1894. She was built for owners on the Thames, but sold to J. Turner of Hull in 1903. In 1904 she passed to French owners. The postcard was written and posted at Hull in 1904 by someone on board the vessel in Alexandra Dock, Hull, July 1904. A little corner and edge wear.
